Notes on the American Flyer Toy Cash Register

American Flyer

These are somewhat rare, but not really worth much more than about $25. I like it because it's all metal and clearly made in an earlier time. According to Kovels it's worth $95 which it may have been pre-eBay. Made in good old Chicago, Made in USA - how rare is that?

Play Money
Thank you to Obie Bell of the American Flyer collector's club
for the photograph of the play money.

This item was made by the same people who made classic American Flyer Trains but haven't confirmed this. American Flyer Trains were first manufactured by the American Flyer Manufacturing Co. in Chicago , IL . In the late 1930's the American Flyer line was bought by The A.C. Gilbert, Co. of New Haven Connecticut , headed by A.C. Gilbert the inventor of Erector sets and many other toys. At the end of World War 2, Gilbert resumed train and toy production. The A.C. Gilbert, Co., acquired by The Wrather, Corp., in the early 60's, was closed in 1966. The American Flyer name, along with all the tools and dies, were sold to the Lionel Corp.
