Popcorn rating (four possible): Four kernels! Could I have laughed any harder? I think not.

In a strange world where gay men and women are feared and sometimes even worse, In and Out takes a frank and funny approach to love, sex, and marriage. The film was inspired by the Oscar telecast when Tom Hanks, while accepting Best Actor for Philadelphia, announced one of his high school teachers was gay. While the incident apparently was not a surprise to the teacher or to anyone else in town, the movie takes the opposite tack where the revelation is both unwelcome and destructive.

A smart and funny comedy ensues with lighthearted moments littered throughout. As always, Kevin Kline lights up the screen with irrepressible charm. If a few moments seem a little seeped in sap, we forgive them for the courageous ones are equally as apparent.

Suggested gustatory accompaniment: Sloe Gin Fizz
