OK, maybe I should have worn something short,
shiny and shitkicking to the flick. Still, even clad in denim
& boots, I enjoyed Romy & Michele. If you go in with the
right perspective, i.e. to enjoy the camp, you will have a great
time. Even though I had a strong group identity in High School
[the "Frisbee People"], I remember those of the
"A" group that scared the tootsies off me. This movie
is about that scare, facing the fear, and maybe kicking it’s
ass. OK, the drama was spineless and jellied, but hey - I can
take it for a few hours.
The best part of the movie is the warm
friendship between Romy & Michele, best friends to the end.
It was the most solid part of the film, as the rest was mostly
fluff. Amusing fluff, but fluff nevertheless. Their genuine
affection for each other made a film that would have been Romy
& Michelle’s Excellent Adventure into Something Better.
Mira Sorvino’s character Romy was somewhat
more in depth than Michele. And although we know these chits are
supposed to be 28, which I suspect Lisa Kudrow is in real life,
when the two were side by side Lisa looked wayyy too old for a
cutsie movie like this. Although her acting and looks are
perfect, that age difference was a little disturbing visually
speaking. The movie would have been more consistent with two
younger women that with a few heaps of suspension of reality
would appear 28, or two real 28 year old women.
Sooo, get our your "Candies" 6"
heals and totter down to the flickers. Lotsa jiggling body
parts, lotsa cool fashion [my fav being the cream double
breasted suited pants on one of the reformed "A"
girls] and lotsa witty comebacks a la Mad Magazine.
The Cybele Short Movie Blurb is: Fluff is a
great thing on a Fluffernutter sandwich, just don’t depend on
it for an overnight hike. Enjoy, enjoy - there is beauty in
Beensie’s French Fries [now open] as well as Mona’s sautéed
red potatoes.
Suggested Gustatorial Accompaniment: Sweet’s
Milk Chocolate Covered Orange Jellies because they jiggle in
tandem to the babettes on screen.
