Popcorn Kernel Rating: Four Kernels = Totally Cinema Worthy

Well! Another strong woman protagonist - the kind I would want to be if I were, well, in a jam - or maybe even if I wasn't. Julia Ormond surprised the heck out of me, since most of her roles so far have been sexy sophisticates. I actually forgot she was acting in this film as her intense and bold character took over previous film incarnations in my head. Julia plays a quirky and downright bitchy ex Greenlander who must solve a murder with her prodigious understanding of the subtleties of snow.

Underneath this back-of-the-video-box description lies a drama that pulled me in and kept me there. Gabriel Byrne brings solidity and a gentle way to his relationship with her, as well as to the film as a whole. While the ending might have been typical blow it up stuff, the rest was more than remarkable - it was... I don't know, just more.

Suggested Gustatorial Accompaniment: Strawberry Italian ices
