Popcorn Kernel Rating (four possible): Four
kernels for sexy driven characters.
In my imagination I am watching Twilight
in black and white, the Hollywood streets drenched with
glittering black rain. Somehow, this mystery seems to beg for a
1940’s film noire treatment, and even filmed in color, it get
it. On the surface, Twilight is a mystery, a plot driven by
intrigue, murder, and secrets. Wait a few minutes though, and
the character study becomes dominant, and so much more
interesting.
What is particularly appealing is that the
characters, all in their fifties, are wholly alive and alert.
For them, children and domesticity are side dishes at best, yet
while they are surely self serving, they are also auteurs,
directors with a singular vision of the soul. The game is rich
versus poor, players or hired help, and ultimately life or
death. As Harry Ross (Paul Newman) puts it - I’m broke, you
are just overextended. If the ending brings no surprises, it
doesn’t matter much, since the meal was so terribly satisfying
all along.
