Interview
with Jonathan Stevens
Want
to represent yourself, but don't know exactly what to do?
Now there's an option for people who want to buy legal services
a la carte. Whether it's advice on your legal rights,
preparation of complicated documents, or just some help with
navigating the complicated world of the law, Vermonters now can
buy just the legal advice they need, when they need it.
Local attorney Jonathan H. Stevens has started his own business,
Pro Se Legal Services,
providing what are called "unbundled" legal services.
"What I've found is that a lot of people have legal
questions that need answers, but those questions aren't big
enough to justify retaining an
attorney," says Stevens.
"With my new service, they can pay as they go - just for
the answers that they need, and
for services such as counsel and advice (coaching), document
preparation (pleadings, contracts, notices, etc.) and legal
research. I
can guide you through the legal process of everything from a
speeding ticket to incorporating a small business
Pro Se Legal Services, legal services for self-sufficient people, is
the first of it's kind in the
Burlington
area. Stevens
has a Master of Studies in Law, cum laude from the
Vermont
Law
School
and a Juris Doctor from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. "I've been practicing
law in
Vermont
for 22 years," says Stevens, "so I have a good idea what kind of services
are most needed by people who want to manage their own legal affairs with minimum
intervention by counsel." Stevens
is focusing on small businesses who he says have a strong need for services
that allow them more control over legal matters. "Owners
of small businesses are usually fully capable of doing their own
legal work if they have competent support and advice. I
specialize in small business law, internet issues, and
environmental law," adds Stevens, "so I know how to
respond to the needs of
Vermont
businesses."
