Hot off the Presses!

PODCAST: Cybele Werts interviews Daphne Worsham, Assistant Director of the Western Regional Resource Center
Daphne has been an information professional for ten years, and has developed our network thesaurus from its near beginning as a paper document to its current incarnation as an online database. Her special skills in this area are of particular interest to information specialists interested in indexing or who may be developing controlled vocabularies for their audience. We also discuss how things are changing on the internet particularly with the use of user-generated tagging such as with YouTube. The printed version of this interview will run in the March, 2008 issue of
Information Outlook, the Journal of the Special Libraries Association. The interview is about 37 minutes long.

A Super Handy Tool for your 21st Century Techno-Toolbox
We’re all familiar with webcams as the weapon of choice for chatting with friends or checking out the city from Times Square, but is it possible that they could be used in an educational or training setting? After having researched this subject extensively, I discovered that there is almost nothing in the literature about using this very useful technology as a collaboration tool. So I set about researching similar delivery methods such as videoconferencing and distance learning, and talking to colleagues to develop some best practices around webcams. Here are my findings, and I think you’ll find them quite surprising. And don’t worry, this article is as lighthearted reading as my others; I won’t bore you with too much techno or pedagogical sermons. On the other hand, you will find some very useful tools and strategies for your training and collaboration work.
This article will run in an upcoming issue of Information Outlook, the Journal of the Special Libraries Association.

Tips for SLA Conference First Timers – from a Wildly Experienced Second Timer! for the June, 2008 Special Libraries Conference in Seattle, WA
On the way back from last summer’s Special Libraries Association (SLA) conference in Denver I got stuck in the airport during a storm. Luckily I’m a writer so I can entertain myself just about anywhere, so I drafted a list of things I wished I’d known before I’d gone to Denver. Fast forward to March 2008 and I sense the Force (as in The Force be with You) emanating from the direction of my file cabinet. A quick look turns up these very notes, just in time to share them with those of you attending your first SLA conference this year in Seattle. So here’s my tips and strategies for coping with days of wildly new ideas being packed into your head, new and old friends to meet and catch up with, piles of marketing goodies, stacks of delicious food, and of course all kinds of fabulous sights to see.
This article will run in the May, 2008 issue of Information Outlook, the Journal of the Special Libraries Association.
