International Cash Registers

Almost all toys produced around the world are destined for the US market. These few examples are toys made in other countries for children who live in the country of origin.

British Toy Town, Circa Early 1900's

This is a one of a kind British Toy Town toy cash register from the early 1900’s. Notice the beautiful tin lithography on all sides, as well as the hand painted brush strokes.

It includes the original 10 shilling and 20 shilling/1 pound notes in the drawer which opens manually. The 20 shilling note features “Titania” the Queen of Fairyland, a mythical figure from the middle ages and a character from William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

2005 Rare Mickey Miniature

An absolutely fabulous miniature made in Japan for Japanese children (as opposed to American kids). This very detailed item features Mickey sitting on top, a drawer opening button shaped like Mickey's hand in glove and a very wee can of Mickey food. Notice the white buttons on the drawer which are also on Mickey's pants. Other nice details include the ripped receipt, the Mickey Ears back, and the tiny white Mickey glove also by the digital display. It comes with a well designed box which features various other toys. Apparently this item is a "surprise" package, so the child doesn't know which of the three toys she will receive. It also includes lots of directions in Japanese.

Hello Kitty for the Japanese Market

I love Hello Kitty items like the rest of the world in part because I'm a cat lover. While this register is not the most creative design on the planet, I snatched it up like the mad collector that I am because it's an actual Japanese toy designed for Japanese children. Nice details on the box and elsewhere are shown below. The only disappointment is that even though it takes four AA batteries, all you get for that battery power is a light up light. Compared to the Hello Kitty electronic cash register also below which actually scans bar codes, this is pretty minimal design.

United Kingdom Musical

This musical cash register is bound to drive any parent insane, but it does play some interesting songs including Adelveis, B-I-N-G-O, Doe a Dear  My Fair Lady, and Joy to the World. Note the Lira sign on the button as well as the rather odd choice of music.

Manchester Tourist Item

This painted ceramic miniature is from England. The seller told me that various areas around England sell tiny cash registers with the emblems of the area as tourist items. Most of them are rather expensive, but I got this one for $25.00. I suppose you could argue that this wasn't intended for people from England, but at least I can say it's not destined neccesarily for American children.
